To improve motorcycle safety many countries order the wearing of protective clothing by motorcyclists, especially a helmet. Other protective equipment may include certain types of jackets, gloves, boots, and pants. Jackets meant for motorcyclists are typically made of nylon, leather, or Kevlar. These jackets usually include heavy padding on the elbow, spine, and shoulder regions. Gloves are generally made of leather or Kevlar and some include carbon fiber knuckle protection. Boots, especially those for sport riding, include reinforcement and plastic caps on the ankle and toe areas. Currently there are two major styles of motorcycle leathers: the tight fitting and sometimes colorful one or two piece suits based on motorcycle racing leathers; and the somewhat looser fitting leather trousers and jackets, usually black and often decorated with metal studs and tassels.

Textile Clothing:

Increasingly, motorcyclists are choosing protective equipment make up of man-made textiles rather than leather due to their improved weather protection from heat, cold, and water, and the increased value these garments tend to provide in terms of pockets and vents. Common materials include high density (600–1000 Denier) ballistic nylon (e.g., Cordura) and Kevlar (or blends of Kevlar, Cordura, and Lycra) and often include waterproof liners made from materials such as Goretex.

Motorcycling Boots:

Boots are worn by motorcycle riders and passengers to prevent or diminish harm to their feet and ankles while riding and in the incident of a crash. Tough, strong, moderately flexible boots with rigid soles provide the rider protection from a number of risks. Boots with oil-resistant, rubber-based merged soles give a grip on the concrete and help keep the rider's feet on the foot rests. If the boots have heels, they should be low and wide to provide a firm base when standing with the bike. In a crash, boots may avoid or reduce foot and ankle injuries.

Helmets:

A motorcycle helmet is protective head covering used by motorcycle riders. The primary target of a motorcycle helmet is to protect the rider's head during impact, although many helmets provide additional protection such as a face shield. In some countries the wearing of motorcycle helmets is compulsory.

Helmets are made in 2 main layers: hard and energy-absorbing. The hard shell spreads an impact over a larger area, while the liner (often polystyrene foam) absorbs energy so less is transferred to the skull & brain

Why Now Is The Time to Buy Your Motorcycle and Cover

As spring is upon us and summer is fast approaching, it is apparent that now is a great time for some tremendous motorcycling. As I predicted a couple of months ago, gas has continued to go up in price and is expected to go even higher. We now have a huge oil spill out in the Gulf of Mexico and the well is continuing to leak thousands of barrels per day with more leaks popping up all the time. Even as we feel for the families of the oil drillers that lost their lives, we realize that this is another example of how something that happens that far away still affects us all. Even if the amount of oil produced by that one well was actually insignificant in the full scheme of things, this disaster will just serve as another excuse for the oil companies to hike up the price of gasoline at the pump. It has already gone up over a dime per gallon this week. Unfortunately, this time there may be a "real" reason as they try to recoup some of the money that the well disaster and the resultant clean-up will eventually cost them. However, with a motorcycle, and the wonderful gas mileage, the high price of gas is just one of many positive reasons to own a bike. I used to own a large Cadillac that got about 20 miles to the gallon, which wasn't bad for such a large car. But of course it pales in comparison to the mileage of even a very large motorcycle. Most motorcycles today get well over 50 miles to the gallon.
Of course, with motorcycles, the real thrill is the ride. I've just read that the most famous motorcycle ride, "The Dragon's Tail" just opened back up on April 12, 2010. And, I-40 which gives much easier access to it is scheduled to reopen today, April 27, 2010. Both roads have been closed for months due to rockslides. The Dragon's Tail has 318 turns in just eleven miles and it is actually only 6 miles as the crow flies. Also, very close to that ride is the Cherohala Skyway which takes you by a waterfall and over a dam and up to over 5,000 feet above sea level. So be sure to wear some warm clothes to enjoy that ride. There are a number of great places to stay and visit right along the Tennessee and North Carolina borders. In my opinion, these are some of the prettiest places in the world. I am from North Carolina and now live in Tennessee, so I just can't imagine anything better than these two states.
So, if you don't already own a motorbike to ride on these or other wonderful excursions, now is the time to get out there and take the leap. And, remember that if you want to keep your bike looking new, invest in a quality waterproof motorcycle cover at the same time. It is quite amazing how great some motorbikes look in the showroom and if you want yours to look that way in four or five years, buying a premium motorcycle cover is the way to do it. Of course, it is best to buy both at the same time and not tell yourself that you will get a cover later and then "later" never comes.

Nearly as long as there have been motorcycles, there have been leather motorcycle jackets. The first motorcycle jackets evolved from the aviator jackets worn by the World War I and World War II fighter pilots. The jackets had narrow collars and were fastened down the front by buttons. At that time, all of the jackets were made of horsehide leather because there was an abundance of this material due to the number of farmers who tended horses. Eventually, the buttons on the motorcycle jacket were replaced by a zipper. Following World War II, aviators commonly took to motorcycles as a way to recapture the exhilaration they experienced as pilots. They continued to wear their same aviator jackets while riding motorcycles.

Marlon Brando epitomized the leather motorcycle jacket when he appeared in the 1953 movie "The Wild One" about two rival motorcycle gangs. Since then, leather jackets became synonymous with motorcycles. The leather jacket also became a status symbol for the rough crowds who defied societal conventions as depicted in many of the early movies featuring motorcycle gangs. Soon kids' motorcycle jackets started showing up in schools. In fact, because of what the jacket represented, most public schools prohibited students from wearing motorcycle apparel on school campuses.

As time went on, the same look and feel of the leather jackets remained. You didn't put on the jacket to be warm; you put it on to be in style with the biking crowd. If you were into biking, you wore a motorcycle jacket. All motorcyclists who rode with clubs sported the jacket to create a sense of camaraderie and belonging. This same attitude toward motorcycle apparel still exists.

Leather jackets eventually shed their outlaw image which created an opportunity for clothing manufacturers to begin creating designs that catered to a more diverse biking population. Kids' motorcycle jackets became common. Women, who once only rode on the back, began piloting their own machines. Leather was still the apparel of choice, but women started donning leather outfits that aligned more with their style and personalities.

The historical black leather jacket is still the most popular form of motorcycle apparel and is unlikely to go out of style. Still, leather jacket designs and fashions are becoming more eclectic and individualistic. Therefore, clothing and apparel designers are creating more varieties in order to keep up with current fashion trends. But the historical sentiment derived from the original aviator-jacket-turned-motorcycle jacket will linger in the hearts of bikers for generations.

How to Get Your Motorcycle Ready For Spring

As the winter starts winding down and the days get longer, you're probably getting eager to don that leather vest and your motorcycle chaps and get out on that first spring road trip. If you live in a place where the winter months are spent under a blanket of snow, then your motorcycle and motorbike gear has likely been sitting dormant for a few months. Just as it is hard for you to put your bike away for winter, the inactivity can be equally taxing on your bike. Rather than revving it up and hitting the road at the first sign of warm weather, you will enjoy safer and more rewarding rides as well as prolong the life of your motorcycle if you properly prepare your bike for the riding season.

A lot of what you do to get your bike and motorbike gear ready for spring depends on what you did to prepare it for winter storage. Your owner's manual has a check list of tasks to complete before you store it. Performing these tasks will make your spring preparation easier and less expensive. You can do much of the maintenance yourself or have a qualified mechanic prepare the engine for use.

During the winter, condensation can build up in your fuel tank and carburetor. This can cause rust and corrosion in your fuel system. Before you put your bike in storage, you probably filled the tank and turned off the petcock (if it has one). Before you turn on the petcock, disconnect the fuel line and drain all the fuel from the tank. Clean the fuel filter and inspect the tank and the carburetor float bowl for rust or corrosion. Replace the fuel line and then fill it with fresh fuel.

If you changed your oil and filter before storing your bike, the oil should be fine. Check the oil to make sure it's clean and free of moisture. Water gives oil a milky appearance which can eventually cause corrosion. If moisture did get into your oil, change it again and replace the filter—even if you changed it right before storing it.

This is a good time to put fresh fluid into the brake master cylinder and check the condition of your brake pads. If they worn or thin, replace them before you go riding very far. However, along the way you might discover that the glimmer of sunshine was just a teaser and you find yourself riding in inclement weather. A rain shower or light snowfall doesn't need to preempt your ride, but there are some precautions you should take to make the ride safer and more enjoyable than the ride would be if you weren't prepared. Your motorcycle apparel will offer some protection, but there are some other precautions that you should take before your ride.

If you have never experienced being caught off guard by a sudden downpour without the benefit of a face shield, many riders will attest that those innocent little water droplets sting when they make contact with your face. In this situation, some motorcyclists will tie a bandana across their face to ward off those steely raindrops. If there is a chance that you might encounter some precipitation on your ride, plan ahead by packing a face guard for your helmet. Instead, keep your speed the same and shift your weight to take the corner.

Naturally, you prefer not to ride when there are hazardous road conditions. I've seen some pretty interesting things over the years that I have been riding motorcycle and every year that I ride I tend to see something that catches my eye while I'm out for a ride. Over the last couple years I've begun to see more an more different types of items that are being purchased to dress up the motorcycle helmet, and some are more interesting than others to say the least!

Perhaps one of the more bizarre items that I noticed on a motorcycle helmet was a 3 inch long spike which was positioned on the top of the helmet as if it where coming straight up out of the rider's head and helmet. This spike was chrome in color and the helmet was a German style helmet. It certainly caught my eye as I sped passed the oncoming motorcyclist.

Another piece of decor that I couldn't help but notice was a helmet that had muskrat coat or beaver coat, or whatever it was, draped over the top of the helmet as though the rider we're wearing it just like a normal fur hat. I couldn't help but wonder to myself whether or not the helmet covering was purchased from a store that actually sells this type of thing, or if the motorcyclist actually made it himself. I'm guessing the later of the two because I haven't come across anyone selling this type of helmet decor.

Finally, I've also notice that more and more riders are wearing the helmet mohawk, which looks like an actually mohawk, only it's fastened to the top of your helmet. This item just screams for attention since you can't help but notice it when you pass someone wearing one. One thing about the helmet mohawk is true and that is it can certainly help the motorcyclist get the attention of others when it wouldn't have been the case before.

With the cancelling of the TV show 'American Chopper", the future of custom choppers is left without a major marketing aid to constantly remind us how much we love choppers. The only custom motorcycle themed show to last more than a season, one has to wonder if the cancellation will have a profound impact on the industry as a whole or is the internet enough to keep it going?

The boost the custom motorcycle business received from the television show created around a group of guys who built custom choppers rivaled the dot com craze in the late nineties as far as the swell of new companies entering the business. As with any artificially created demand, eventually consumers came back to reality and many of the newly created motorcycle shops were forced to close their doors.

Once an almost completely underground market, the interest that was generated in those who would normally not be interested in choppers also propelled small companies into huge success and created an internet niche that has remained as large as it was during the custom motorcycle craze. Since websites are much less expensive to maintain than brick and mortar businesses, the economic slump did little to affect the huge number of websites that were built around custom motorcycles.

The question now is whether or not the business of building choppers can survive through this recession with only magazine ads and internet buzz to keep it a float. I would suspect many small shops that are barely hanging on will close their doors before the end of the year. Some may simply turn back into one man operations that can no longer afford a crew of bike builders.

The good news for hands on builders is that each one only needs to produce 5 or 6 choppers a year to keep their heads above water. And the few customers looking for choppers in these tough times are also the sort to not search for bargains as much as getting the bike they really want. Most blue collar workers, the type that were stretching their budgets to get into their own custom bikes when times were good are certainly not going to risk their families financial future on a $30,000 toy.

So this really leaves only the well to do and hardcore bikers as potential buyers of custom bikes in general. I believe the average Joes will come back to buying choppers but not until this economic slump is truly over and Americans are no longer afraid to spend money again. But we have certainly seen the heyday of the custom chopper industry. There's just simply no way it will be what it was during the American Chopper craze.

Probably more than half of those that bought custom bikes just because of the show have already traded them in on more practical motorcycles, if they're even still riding. When times got tough many just couldn't justify keeping something in the garage for an occasional ride that was worth more than a lot of Americans make in a year.

While there is future for choppers, it isn't going to look anything like the recent past.

A Ride Without Motorcycle Leathers

Have you ever wished you had a good set of motorcycle leathers? I will never forget the winter of 1987. My wife and I were living on the North shore of Chicago. She was working as an elementary school teacher and I was finishing grad school. Money was tight, so a second car was out of the question. The hassle of sharing a vehicle has always been more than I can stand to endure, so I began looking for some other form of cheap transportation. In those days I had yet to own a motorcycle, but I had always wanted one. While driving by the local shopping mall near our neighborhood, I noticed a motorcycle sitting beside the road with a for sale sign hanging off the front forks. It looked pretty small, but as the chrome glinted in the sun I found myself strangely drawn to pull over and check it out.

The bike was a 1972 Honda CB350, and for being 16 years old at the time, it was in great condition. It looked like it had been barely ridden and then tucked away in a garage somewhere. This was about 23 years ago now, so I honestly can not remember what color it was originally. I painted it metallic flake blue within the first year of owning it. To me, this bike was priceless, but I paid only $300 for it later that afternoon.

Now that my transportation problem was solved, I began regularly making the 20 mile commute to school. Which if you have ever been in Chicago traffic, you understand that a trip of that distance could take an hour or more. It must have bought the motorcycle in the summer because I remember how much I loved tooling around on it for the first few months. But then the temperature began to drop and the snow began to fly. I quickly learned that there is a good reason for Chicago being known as the windy city. Riding a motorcycle alongside Lake Michigan in the winter is like running naked through a meet packing plant with 100 high speed fans blowing on you. I mean it was cut you to the bone frigid!

Although I did have a full face helmet, I never seemed to have clothing that could keep the icy wind from penetrating down to my soul. I even remember forgetting my gloves one night and having to put my socks on my hands just to survive the ride home. My ankles still hurt when I think about it. Even though we now live in the south eastern United States, and you can ride nearly all year round, just thinking about those frosty mid-western motorcycle rides can send a nasty chill up my spine.

Since that time I've clocked countless miles on everything from Hondas to Harleys, and if there is one thing I have learned, it is that there is no substitute for a set of high quality motorcycle leathers. Touring Mighigan's Upper Penninsula By Motorcycle

One of the reasons I ride is for the spirit of facing the road and life with a can-do attitude, and another is for the joy of seeing the landscape unfold. If that's part of your riding psyche, too, you'll feel right at home in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, or "The U.P." as the locals call it. Stretching 310 miles from Sault Ste. Marie near its eastern end to Ironwood near its western border, it's a wild land separated from the Lower Peninsula by the Mackinac Bridge, and from Detroit (293 miles to the south) by major cultural differences.

I was born and raised in Michigan's western Lower Peninsula, and can remember in grade school singing the unofficial state song, "Michigan, My Michigan" (to the tune of "Tannenbaum, O Tannenbaum"). In the 1970s I used to ride up into the U.P. on vacation. Despite a move to California more than 30 years ago I still return to my hometown, but had not been back to the U.P. since 1975. That's why I was especially enthused about the opportunity to ride there for a few fall days last October.

On this latest trip I found the U.P. refreshingly unchanged, and rather than my early 1970s Honda CB450 I was now riding an Electra Glide Classic borrowed from Bald Eagle Harley-Davidson in Marquette. I was also accompanied by Brad Kolbus, from Munising, on his Road King; he publishes a rider's guide to the U.P., seems to know everybody, and knows where to ride and what to see.

Just after we began riding along the Superior lakeshore by Marquette Bay, I immediately pulled Brad over at a vision that seemed right out of a Star Wars movie to ask, "What the heck is that?" It was a huge structure, massive and gray, and hundreds of feet long, a succession of high, close-set concrete archways extending out into the water. Brad informed me that it was the old Lower Harbor Ore Dock, now no longer in use. Railroad cars full of iron ore were shunted onto it, workmen lowered chutes and the ore rattled noisily into the holds of the huge ore carriers that used to dock here.

Next we ride west, where we note signs of the approaching fall season: Pontoon boats up on blocks, firewood neatly stacked on porches and the leaves turning yellow. We reach Big Bay; this little town was the scene of a murder in 1951 that inspired the book Anatomy of a Murder, and the 1959 movie by the same name starring Jimmy Stewart and Lee Remick. We grab lunch at the Thunder Bay Inn, which was the setting for scenes in the classic film. The pub in which we dine was built onto the hotel for the filming.

Though Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario are referred to as "The Great Lakes," they're actually great inland seas. In Munising I board a 60-foot observation boat for a cruise along the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The captain informs us that Superior alone contains enough fresh water to cover the entire continental United States to a depth of 5 feet! It's cool and blustery this day, and once we clear Grand Island we're in Lake Superior proper where the waves begin to rock and roll. Most of the patrons abandon the cold, windswept open viewing area on top for the glass-enclosed seating on the main deck, as I consider abandoning my lunch over the side. All along the Pictured Rocks we're treated to a humorous, running commentary about the rock cliffs that have been eroded by eons of wind, rain and freezing weather, and painted in shades of brown, tan and green by the runoff of the limonite, copper, iron and manganese. We sail past caves, arches and a rock called the Indian's Head. A wide, filmy waterfall drops like a veil from the striated cliffs.

The next day Brad and I ride from Munising east on M28 along what is called "the Seney Stretch," 25 straight miles through scrubland full of stunted trees and pines. Thirty-some years ago I had stopped in Seney to commemorate that it was right here, where Highways 28 and 77 intersect, that a young Ernest Hemingway had disembarked the train in 1919. Wounded in World War I, Hemingway had hiked north to fish the Fox River, and would later fictionalize the experience in one of his Nick Adams stories called The Big Two-Hearted River. But wait, the Two Heart is actually well north of here; did Hemingway get it wrong? Nope. Like a true fisherman, he had misnamed the river in an attempt to keep his favorite fishing spot a secret.

We ride eastward on a tree-lined two-lane road, and when we pass the sign for Deer Park I recall camping near it on Muskallonge Lake in the '70s. My evening was enlivened when five raccoons came snuffling up from the lake, begging on their hind legs. I gave them some bread, and half an hour later was toasting marshmallows over the fire when something tapped me on the shoulder. Startled, I turned around to find a raccoon, and when I turned back another was running off with the toasted marshmallow as two others were hot-footing it into the darkness with the entire bag between them! They don't wear those little bandit masks for nothing!

Lake Superior is cold, gray and whitecapped on this blustery day, and when the rain begins I huddle into my electric gear and crank the thermostat to "weld." The Classic's fairing and lowers keep the worst of the weather off me, and Gordon Lightfoot's haunting dirge "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" plays through the stereo on our ride to The Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum on Whitefish Point. The song recounts the sea disaster that occurred on November 10, 1975, when the ore carrier sank in a storm with all 29 men, just 17 miles northwest of here. In the Museum's boathouse I meet Tom Farnquist, executive director of the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society. Speculation is that the SS Edmund Fitzgerald was too close to Caribou Island some 40 miles northeast of here, where 35-foot seas in 45 feet of water allowed the carrier to strike bottom, which damaged her hull and caused her to take on water. She eventually broke in two and sank in 535 feet of water off Whitefish Point. Farnquist has dived on the wreck and personally helped recover the ship's bell, which now comprises the centerpiece of the museum.

Dinner was at the Antlers Restaurant in Sault Ste. Marie, which was packed this Friday night. Yeah, it's a Yooper place all right, with trophy heads and stuffed wildlife arranged along the walls and among the rafters. Suddenly, a siren sounds, lights flash and we ask the waitress what the heck's going on. "Oh, they do that every time they open a new keg," she explains.

In the morning we cross the street from our motel for a view of the famous Soo Locks. Unfortunately, at this particular moment there's not a ship in sight. The International Bridge looms in the distance with Canada just across the way.

It's about a 55-mile freeway ride south to the Mackinac Bridge, then we turn westward on Highway 2 through low scrubland with Lake Michigan on our left. In Blaney Park Brad introduces me to Steve Zellar, who puts on an annual motorcycle event called The Blaney Park Rendezvous. He gives us a tour of his expansive campground that accommodated 3,000 riders last year; his 2010 rally will be held June 18-20.

The thumb-shaped Garden Peninsula hangs down into Lake Michigan, and is home to Fayette Historic State Park. Fayette was established in 1867 as an iron-smelting operation with huge furnaces, an extensive dock and homes; about 500 people lived and worked here. When the charcoal iron market declined, the operation was discontinued in 1891 and Fayette was abandoned. Today, it has been left as an arrested ruin, a gift from the past with its unpainted foreman's houses, the old hotel and castlelike stone remains of the smelter on picturesque Snail Shell Harbor.

We stop in Nahma at the Nahma Inn, a bed & breakfast with 14 charming rooms and a full bar and restaurant. Brad introduces me to owners Charley and Laurie Macintosh (he seems to know everybody) who are planning a bike event there in the near future. Next door is the old general store, which was abandoned in the '50s with some of its merchandise still intact. Its owner, a gentleman named Pat, gives us a tour of its time-capsule interior.

Brad leads us up H13 north into Alger County, and this fall Sunday afternoon we enjoy the turning leaves as the Harley feels surprisingly nimble following the road's hills and gentle curves. Every few miles a trail or two-tracks leads off into the yellow woods, where muddy dirt bikes and ATVs disappear; we long to follow them into the forest.

From there it's west where we visit Da Yoopers Tourist Trap near Ishpeming. As an ex-Michigander it was just as corny as I'd hoped, with life-sized dioramas of a Jeep driven by a deer with a hunter tied across the hood, of deer playing cards, the place full of Yooper bumper stickers and souvenirs. Out front is "Gus," the world's largest running/working chain saw (it's in The Guinness Book of Records), and "Big Ernie," the largest working rifle.

The ghost town of Fayette serves as a symbol for much of the U.P. that, unfortunately, is suffering economically.

Along the roads are abandoned homes and factories. Tourism is now the main economic driver in the area, and there is much about the U.P. to love. To me, the true charm of the place-with its pines and cedars, maples and birches, hidden lakes and bays, and rustic cabins-is how the whole thing comes together. On this fall Sunday we rumble along backroads to The Up North Lodge near Gwinn. The sunlight dapples the red-and-yellow maple leaves, and there's a cool dampness in the air from a recent passing shower. We tromp inside as the fragrance of wood smoke wafts from the stone fireplace. Many patrons turn to nod and greet us. Burgers and pollock, ribs, whitefish and smelt populate the menu, and a football game illuminates the big screen. This welcoming, rustic friendliness confirms that this truly is still Michigan...my Michigan.

What Dirt Bike To Buy For My Kid?

Are you thinking about buying a dirt bike for your kid but don't know which bike to choose or look for? Well, this will give you info about the name brand bikes for kids and help you make a decision. Choosing the right bike for your young rider can be very important, especially if they've never ridden before. Kids start riding as young as three years old, so basically once they are able to ride a bicycle without training wheels they should be capable of riding a dirt bike. And please don't put training wheels on a little dirt bike, that just defeats the purpose. There are a few factors that come in to play when finding the right dirt bike for a kid. Age, experience, size, and where you are going to ride all come in to play when looking for a bike. There are 50, 70, 80, 90, 100, 110, 125, and 150cc four-stroke dirt bikes that are mostly meant for off-road and trail riding. For the smaller two-stroke dirt bikes, there are a couple different 50s, 65s, and 85cc bikes. These are used for motocross racing.

Off-Road Bikes
50cc

There are a few different 50cc dirt bikes, but the most common is the Honda CRF50F/XR50R. This is where dirt biking starts for every little kid that has never ridden before. These things are almost bullet proof if you maintain it properly. If you are looking for a first bike for a kid that is under 7 then this is probably the best choice, unless they are bigger/taller than the norm. There is also the Suzuki JR50, Kawasaki KDX50 and Yamaha PW50; all of which are oil-injected 2-strokes that are very light and perfect for the smallest of riders, and the Yamaha TTR-50 which is about the same as the CRF, so it just depends what color you like best.

70 & 80cc

Honda made the CRF/XR70 and 80cc bikes for kids that are just starting, but a little too big for a 50cc. The 70 has a taller seat height with a little more power than the 50, but the 80 has a clutch which is perfect for training the little ones without letting them ride on a fast bike.

100/110/125/150cc

Honda has been known for their XR/CRF100 which reaches to a variety of riders. It has a clutch and is just right for the older kids to learn on if they are too big for the CRF80F. The 100 is a great trail bike because it has just enough power, and it's also big enough for an adult, so this bike should be easy to find used, and cheap I might add. Kawasaki and Suzuki decided to make the ultimate pit bike for kids and adults. The KLX110/DRZ110 (Parts are interchangeable) has become popular because of how much power it has, or is able to put out, for its size. The 110 is an automatic, so it's great for smaller riders that want more power than a 70 without going to a clutch yet. Yamaha also has a bigger off-road bike for kids, the TTR-125. The TTR-125 is a popular model for bigger kids just starting out. It has a clutch with enough power to haul riders around, young or old. Honda also has the CRF150F for riders that want more power and a taller ride height than the 100. Although the set-back for the 150 is that it weighs about as much as a full-size motocross bike. These mid-sized off-road bikes are popular for a reason, and this means that they have usually been ridden a lot and probably abused. So if you're looking at buying a used one then make sure it is clean, it has somewhat low hours, and has been well maintained.

Motocross Bikes
50cc

There are a couple different name-brand 50cc motocross bikes for kids, and they are both KTM two-strokes. KTM has the 50 SX Mini, which is for the smallest beginning racers. There is also the 50 SX which is bigger and suits a little taller beginning racer. These bikes both have a one-speed automatic transmission and are liquid-cooled. KTM 50s are expensive, but they are perfect race bikes for your little kids that are ready to tear up the tracks. There are also Chinese companies with 50cc motocross bikes, such as LEM, Cobra, and others.

65cc

KTM and Kawasaki are the only name brand companies that still make a 65cc two-stroke motocross bike. KTM has the 65 SX which is more expensive and usually the racers that are serious buy them. Right from the factory KTM puts aftermarket parts on their bikes, such as VForce reeds on the two-strokes, handlebars, and Brembo brakes. The Kawasaki KX65 is what riders that just want to race buy because they are so cheap. That does not mean that they aren't fast, they just aren't always as reliable and don't have a very high re-sale value. Both are great race bikes for intermediate younger riders in around the age 7-10 that have been riding for some time. These bikes are usually not used for trail riding because they are not as easy to ride and lug around as a four-stroke is.

85/105/150cc

85cc motocross bikes are the start for a young teen aged racer. They have more power than most any kid could use, which makes these bikes a blast for adults or adrenaline-junkies as well. KTM, Suzuki, Kawasaki, and Yamaha all make an 85cc two-stroke mx bike. Honda put a stop to their two-stroke inventory after 2007, but people still buy their late model bikes. Instead, Honda wanted to start a revolution for mini-bikes with their all new 150cc four-stroke motocross bike. It was well talked about, but once it came out it died slowly. They are powerful bikes and are easier to ride than an 85, but the weight and cost lost it for them. Usually these CRF150R's (Big and small wheel) were bought by racers with money because they also needed quite a bit of maintenance. If you have money and your kid loves the easy ride-ability of a four-stroke then this would be a good race bike to buy. If you don't have a deep pocket, then an 85 or 100/105cc two-stroke stroke is a great choice. Your kid will love you for getting them one of these bikes; before they flip it at least once, that is. If you find someone selling a used 85 that hasn't been flipped, then you're either lucky or they're lying. 85s are pretty much race-only bikes. I've trail-ridden with one, and it was not very fun because of the lack of power down low. The Honda CR85R and Yamaha YZ85 hit harder and are more snappy than the others because they don't have a power valve. KTM's 85 SX comes with aftermarket goodies from the factory like all of their other bikes, so it's probably the fastest out of the lot. Kawasaki's KX85 and Suzuki's RM85 are very similar and are used by many riders that are on a budget because of how cheap they can be. Honda and Suzuki both have a larger wheel 85, which helps those taller kids that quite aren't ready for a 125 or 250f. Kawasaki and KTM have a big-bore 85 to compete in the supermini class (86-112cc). Kawasaki's KX100 is a big wheel and has plenty of power for any young racer. KTM has a 105 SX which is one of the best power-to-weight ratio bikes you can buy, and also has larger wheels. When it comes down to choosing an 85,100/105, or a 150cc four-stroke motocross bike for your kid, it depends how big your pocketbook is, what fits your kid, and what color you like best. Motocross - 4 Simple Steps For Constructing Your Own Dirt Bike Tracks

You might not have 9 or 10 acres of land to mess around with, but that does not mean you can't make a good track. You can still make a useful dirt bike track as long as you follow some important rules. As long as you have a bit of land and a tractor you can make a track that will give you many years of fun riding your dirt bike motorcycles. Of course, you may perhaps find that making dirt bike tracks is more thrilling than actually riding.

Step 1 - Getting Authorization is Job Number One

There's no use to take it any further till you get some required permissions. Obviously, asking your folks for permission is step number one, but there are more individuals that must give their approval too. You must be sure you obtain whatever permits are needed that will enable you to lawfully make and use your track.

Additionally, you want to ask your neighbors for the go-ahead. I know it's tough to imagine, but some individuals don't like noisy dirt bikes drowning out the sound of their television or additional dust settling on their outside furniture. Save yourself a heap of hassles by making sure you get approval from your neighbors, otherwise you run the risk of creating a dirt bike track that you can't ride on. Spending cash and time making a wonderful track, only to have the local authorities close you down, will not improve relations with your neighbors.

Step 2 - Choose the Top Location

Clay is the most effective kind of soil for a track and will throw up less dust and dirt than other kinds of dirt, but the clouds of dust can still be bothersome to neighbors. If all of them possess dirt bike motorcycles you almost certainly won't have too much of a problem, however the possibilities of that are extraordinarily slim. If they seem a bit tense about having a track in their backyard maybe you can agree to use it on specific days of the week.

You want to create it in an area where the terrain will require less work to whip into shape. For instance, if you are able to find a site where the natural landscape already has small hills you won't have to spend as much time with the Bobcat building your own personal jumps from scratch.

If you have the option of selecting a location with dry dusty dirt or good clay soil, do not opt for a future dust bowl. In addition to loud engines, dust and dirt can be a big issue in your neighbor's eyes. If at all possible, try to choose a site where an excessive quantity of dirt and dust will not end up in your neighbor's backyard.

Also, be aware that low lying sections of track can become small lakes during wet weather, therefore it's to your best interest to plan your design correctly. It will also help if you create the paths at an angle, permitting water to run off rather than puddle. With correct planning you can eliminate a ton of future maintenance.

Step 3 - Design Your Course prior to Getting into the Bobcat

Ride your bike through the future track prior to selecting the route that your track will take. This will give you a good idea on the natural flow of the land and allow you to style a suitable track layout. Dirt bike tracks should be designed to take advantage of the unique terrain that already exists. The track must also be based on your talent level. For instance, if you are a newbie it probably is not wise to build jumps that you can't deal with safely.

Above all else, dirt bike tracks need to be built to be as safe as possible. Don't make jumps where big rocks and trees will make riding hazardous. If you can't get away from the trees and rocks at least place some padded protection such as hay bales or old mattresses in front of potentially damaging items. If you're going to have an accident you would like to be able to get up and ride again. Hospital trips are not as fun as they're cracked up to be.

Step 4 - Rev up that Bobcat and Start Moving that Dirt

If you do not have a powerful tractor in your garage a Bobcat will be your next option. It is possible to rent one, with or without an operator, at very cheap prices. You'll be shocked at how fast your track will take form when you begin pushing that dirt around.

Mold some hills into jumps that fit your talent level and put berms at the base of other hills. It is a sensible idea to form as many turns and corners as you can so that you won't be able to develop too much speed going into the jumps.

Sticking with these four steps can help you create a dirt bike track that you can be proud of and that will be safe for many years to come. Do yourself a favor and spend as much time as necessary coming up with the design of the track. A well-designed plan will be safer, more fun, and require less work and maintenance.

I have always loved custom motorcycles. I like anything from the simplistic to the sublime. I like simple custom painted motorcycle jobs, racers, choppers, cruisers and hogs. Custom Harley Davidson's, however, are my favorite. I have dreamed of owning a custom Harley Davidson motorcycle ever since I was a boy.

I think it started off with my uncle. He was a hughe motorcycle aficionados, and an amateur custom motorcycle builder as well. My parents loved him because he would get me off of their hands on the weekends, and I loved him because he was always working on something interesting. I would go over to his house and see the garage strewn with Harley parts.

My parents were extremely fastidious, having to put everything in its proper place at all times. My uncle, however, had a very different philosophy of life. He loved to make a mess, particularly when he was involved in something hands-on. And he was always involved in some sort of hands-on project or other. Most of his motorcycles actually weren't custom Harley Davidson bikes.

He was a big fan of Indians, and he had one he was always working on. I watched him restore that Indian motorcycle together from ground up and considering most or all of the parts were delivered in 44 Gallon Drums of oil it was impressive to say the least but I was waiting for him to build a Harley. It wasn't too long before my prayers were answered.

He actually got an order for a custom Harley Davidson from one of the neighborhood kids. Although there were more highly ranked custom motorcycle builders out there, there was not anyone else who would do a good job for such an affordable price like my uncle would.

You see, he didn't build custom motorcycles for a living, but as a hobby. It was a labor of love for him, and as such he would always do a solid job. That is how he got the custom Harley Davidson order in the first place. Some kid had inherited his dad's old bike, and wanted my old uncle to fix it.

Not having the skills himself, he asked my uncle to help him out. I spent the whole summer helping him build that bike. My body was always streaked with grease from those custom motorcycle parts that I was handling. I was restless and grubby, but I was a happy kid. As a matter of fact, it was one of the best summers that I ever had!

Needless to say I've owned my current Harley for over 10 years now and I always tell people that my biggest regret was that I didn't buy it 10 years earlier. Yes it is customized but not in a show bike sense, it looks fantastic but more for touring I have ridden my Harley though every major city in Australia and will continue to do so until I die.

OH! and I am going to do a full custom of my own NOT a Harley though an Indian (not restore) but fully customize from the frame up in honor of my Uncle.

Touring Mighigan's Upper Penninsula by Motorcycle

One of the reasons I ride is for the spirit of facing the road and life with a can-do attitude, and another is for the joy of seeing the landscape unfold. If that's part of your riding psyche, too, you'll feel right at home in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, or "The U.P." as the locals call it. Stretching 310 miles from Sault Ste. Marie near its eastern end to Ironwood near its western border, it's a wild land separated from the Lower Peninsula by the Mackinac Bridge, and from Detroit (293 miles to the south) by major cultural differences.

I was born and raised in Michigan's western Lower Peninsula, and can remember in grade school singing the unofficial state song, "Michigan, My Michigan" (to the tune of "Tannenbaum, O Tannenbaum"). In the 1970s I used to ride up into the U.P. on vacation. Despite a move to California more than 30 years ago I still return to my hometown, but had not been back to the U.P. since 1975. That's why I was especially enthused about the opportunity to ride there for a few fall days last October.

On this latest trip I found the U.P. refreshingly unchanged, and rather than my early 1970s Honda CB450 I was now riding an Electra Glide Classic borrowed from Bald Eagle Harley-Davidson in Marquette. I was also accompanied by Brad Kolbus, from Munising, on his Road King; he publishes a rider's guide to the U.P., seems to know everybody, and knows where to ride and what to see.

Just after we began riding along the Superior lakeshore by Marquette Bay, I immediately pulled Brad over at a vision that seemed right out of a Star Wars movie to ask, "What the heck is that?" It was a huge structure, massive and gray, and hundreds of feet long, a succession of high, close-set concrete archways extending out into the water. Brad informed me that it was the old Lower Harbor Ore Dock, now no longer in use. Railroad cars full of iron ore were shunted onto it, workmen lowered chutes and the ore rattled noisily into the holds of the huge ore carriers that used to dock here.

Next we ride west, where we note signs of the approaching fall season: Pontoon boats up on blocks, firewood neatly stacked on porches and the leaves turning yellow. We reach Big Bay; this little town was the scene of a murder in 1951 that inspired the book Anatomy of a Murder, and the 1959 movie by the same name starring Jimmy Stewart and Lee Remick. We grab lunch at the Thunder Bay Inn, which was the setting for scenes in the classic film. The pub in which we dine was built onto the hotel for the filming.

Though Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario are referred to as "The Great Lakes," they're actually great inland seas. In Munising I board a 60-foot observation boat for a cruise along the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The captain informs us that Superior alone contains enough fresh water to cover the entire continental United States to a depth of 5 feet! It's cool and blustery this day, and once we clear Grand Island we're in Lake Superior proper where the waves begin to rock and roll. Most of the patrons abandon the cold, windswept open viewing area on top for the glass-enclosed seating on the main deck, as I consider abandoning my lunch over the side. All along the Pictured Rocks we're treated to a humorous, running commentary about the rock cliffs that have been eroded by eons of wind, rain and freezing weather, and painted in shades of brown, tan and green by the runoff of the limonite, copper, iron and manganese. We sail past caves, arches and a rock called the Indian's Head. A wide, filmy waterfall drops like a veil from the striated cliffs.

The next day Brad and I ride from Munising east on M28 along what is called "the Seney Stretch," 25 straight miles through scrubland full of stunted trees and pines. Thirty-some years ago I had stopped in Seney to commemorate that it was right here, where Highways 28 and 77 intersect, that a young Ernest Hemingway had disembarked the train in 1919. Wounded in World War I, Hemingway had hiked north to fish the Fox River, and would later fictionalize the experience in one of his Nick Adams stories called The Big Two-Hearted River. But wait, the Two Heart is actually well north of here; did Hemingway get it wrong? Nope. Like a true fisherman, he had misnamed the river in an attempt to keep his favorite fishing spot a secret.

We ride eastward on a tree-lined two-lane road, and when we pass the sign for Deer Park I recall camping near it on Muskallonge Lake in the '70s. My evening was enlivened when five raccoons came snuffling up from the lake, begging on their hind legs. I gave them some bread, and half an hour later was toasting marshmallows over the fire when something tapped me on the shoulder. Startled, I turned around to find a raccoon, and when I turned back another was running off with the toasted marshmallow as two others were hot-footing it into the darkness with the entire bag between them! They don't wear those little bandit masks for nothing!

Lake Superior is cold, gray and whitecapped on this blustery day, and when the rain begins I huddle into my electric gear and crank the thermostat to "weld." The Classic's fairing and lowers keep the worst of the weather off me, and Gordon Lightfoot's haunting dirge "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" plays through the stereo on our ride to The Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum on Whitefish Point. The song recounts the sea disaster that occurred on November 10, 1975, when the ore carrier sank in a storm with all 29 men, just 17 miles northwest of here. In the Museum's boathouse I meet Tom Farnquist, executive director of the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society. Speculation is that the SS Edmund Fitzgerald was too close to Caribou Island some 40 miles northeast of here, where 35-foot seas in 45 feet of water allowed the carrier to strike bottom, which damaged her hull and caused her to take on water. She eventually broke in two and sank in 535 feet of water off Whitefish Point. Farnquist has dived on the wreck and personally helped recover the ship's bell, which now comprises the centerpiece of the museum.

Dinner was at the Antlers Restaurant in Sault Ste. Marie, which was packed this Friday night. Yeah, it's a Yooper place all right, with trophy heads and stuffed wildlife arranged along the walls and among the rafters. Suddenly, a siren sounds, lights flash and we ask the waitress what the heck's going on. "Oh, they do that every time they open a new keg," she explains.

In the morning we cross the street from our motel for a view of the famous Soo Locks. Unfortunately, at this particular moment there's not a ship in sight. The International Bridge looms in the distance with Canada just across the way.

It's about a 55-mile freeway ride south to the Mackinac Bridge, then we turn westward on Highway 2 through low scrubland with Lake Michigan on our left. In Blaney Park Brad introduces me to Steve Zellar, who puts on an annual motorcycle event called The Blaney Park Rendezvous. He gives us a tour of his expansive campground that accommodated 3,000 riders last year; his 2010 rally will be held June 18-20.

The thumb-shaped Garden Peninsula hangs down into Lake Michigan, and is home to Fayette Historic State Park. Fayette was established in 1867 as an iron-smelting operation with huge furnaces, an extensive dock and homes; about 500 people lived and worked here. When the charcoal iron market declined, the operation was discontinued in 1891 and Fayette was abandoned. Today, it has been left as an arrested ruin, a gift from the past with its unpainted foreman's houses, the old hotel and castlelike stone remains of the smelter on picturesque Snail Shell Harbor.

We stop in Nahma at the Nahma Inn, a bed & breakfast with 14 charming rooms and a full bar and restaurant. Brad introduces me to owners Charley and Laurie Macintosh (he seems to know everybody) who are planning a bike event there in the near future. Next door is the old general store, which was abandoned in the '50s with some of its merchandise still intact. Its owner, a gentleman named Pat, gives us a tour of its time-capsule interior.

Brad leads us up H13 north into Alger County, and this fall Sunday afternoon we enjoy the turning leaves as the Harley feels surprisingly nimble following the road's hills and gentle curves. Every few miles a trail or two-tracks leads off into the yellow woods, where muddy dirt bikes and ATVs disappear; we long to follow them into the forest.

From there it's west where we visit Da Yoopers Tourist Trap near Ishpeming. As an ex-Michigander it was just as corny as I'd hoped, with life-sized dioramas of a Jeep driven by a deer with a hunter tied across the hood, of deer playing cards, the place full of Yooper bumper stickers and souvenirs. Out front is "Gus," the world's largest running/working chain saw (it's in The Guinness Book of Records), and "Big Ernie," the largest working rifle.

The ghost town of Fayette serves as a symbol for much of the U.P. that, unfortunately, is suffering economically.

Along the roads are abandoned homes and factories. Tourism is now the main economic driver in the area, and there is much about the U.P. to love. To me, the true charm of the place-with its pines and cedars, maples and birches, hidden lakes and bays, and rustic cabins-is how the whole thing comes together. On this fall Sunday we rumble along backroads to The Up North Lodge near Gwinn. The sunlight dapples the red-and-yellow maple leaves, and there's a cool dampness in the air from a recent passing shower. We tromp inside as the fragrance of wood smoke wafts from the stone fireplace. Many patrons turn to nod and greet us. Burgers and pollock, ribs, whitefish and smelt populate the menu, and a football game illuminates the big screen. This welcoming, rustic friendliness confirms that this truly is still Michigan...my Michigan.

Unbelievable beauty that unless you see it you wouldn't believe that it's real. This is one of the most gorgeous sites we have ever seen. When you view it from a motorcycle or motor scooter it is twice the view.
Now you might be saying, I don't want to ride 1400 miles on a motorcycle or a motor scooter from where I live. Well, that's why you have the option of loading your motorcycle or motor scooter in the back of a truck or trailer and hauling it there and then take the incredible ride once you get there. I'm telling you, you will never forget it. The key is to go in the late summer time or early fall around October. Obviously check the weather before you go. As you might be aware, Brian Head is a winter ski and snow board resort so during the winter time they get a ton of snow. Riding in the extreme cold or with snow on the ground is definitely not advisable as it can be very dangerous. Oh, by the way, what if you don't own a motorcycle or motor scooter. If you are storing your bike in an indoor auto storage facility, it will not be subjected to the same extreme temperatures and weather conditions. Storing your bike indoors can also make it easier to do the actual winterizing work. Being able to work in warmth while staying safe from the elements will help encourage you to properly service and winterize your vehicle.

To properly winterize your bike for storage, you primarily need to be concerned with maintaining a charge in the battery. Like all batteries, motorcycle batteries tend to lose their charge when left unused for long periods of time. In fact, because motorcycle batteries are smaller than standard car batteries, if left alone throughout the entire winter it is possible that your battery charge could diminish to the point where it will be unable to even take a charge in the future.

You can purchase battery chargers to give your bike's battery a low rate of charge periodically to keep it running. These types of chargers will turn themselves off to avoid overcharging your battery, and they can be permanently attached to the battery while the motorcycle is in storage.

You also need to be concerned about the possible deterioration of the fuel in your bike's tank. Fuel stored in a motorcycle gas tank will deteriorate over time while the bike is in storage. This can cause a gummy build-up in not only your gas tank, but throughout the entire fuel system, which results in your bike being difficult, or even impossible to start. This can be avoided by properly winterizing your motorcycle before finding an outdoor storage unit.

It’s always a problem knowing what to pack for a motorcycle tour. Fortunately, that feeling of utter freedom we get when we are riding our bikes far outweighs the problem of limited luggage space. Having said that, the problem doesn’t go away, but by applying a little thought, it can be overcome. Here are some tips to make life easier on the road.

TRAVEL LIGHLTY

It’s tempting to throw as much as possible into your panniers, but remember, every ounce you pack onto your bike reduces handling qualities. Add to this a pillion and the needle on the pleasure-ometer begins to swing to the low side. Of course, there are some things that you can’t do without, but the keyword here is need. Take what you need and nothing more. If you are going on an organised guided tour, the company should (if it’s worth its salt) have a back-up vehicle that will carry your luggage.

PACK SENSIBLY

To optimise the handling of your bike, place heavy items at the bottom of your panniers.

BEFORE YOU GO

In the weeks leading up to your planned tour, begin making a list of what you might need to take with you. At this stage, it doesn’t matter if the list is too long; you can always cross things off as the time draws nearer. By using this method, you will ensure that the things you take with you are what you really need. You will also reduce the risk of leaving behind an essential item.

MOTORCYCLE LUGGAGE

Unless you like riding for hours with a rucksack strapped to your back, it’s invariably better to have panniers and back box. Detachable panniers are great; they can be unhooked as carried like a suitcase. Belt bags are also popular for carrying things like money, credit cards and mobile phone.

TO ROLL OR NOT TO ROLL

You’ll have to decide this for yourselves, but personally speaking I prefer to roll my clothes before placing them in a bag inside the panniers. Other riders like to lay things flat, but it doesn’t work for me. Some bikers like to use zippable plastic bags that are sat upon to squeeze out the air before they are sealed. They claim that the vacuum keeps their clothes crease-free, but of course, I’m just not heavy enough (hee-hee).

TANK BAGS

Tank bags are fine and some of expandable ones can hold quite a lot of luggage, but it does take the fun out of it a little bit for me. If you’re going on a tour with a back-up vehicle, you only have to put up with the tank bag until you reach your starting point, then someone else carries it for you; great.

PLASTIC SEALABLE BAG

It’s always good to keep your smelly socks away from your good clothes. How many times have you gone into your luggage and found that you can’t decide whether you’ve worn those socks once before or not?

SMALL ITEMS

Very often small items are forgotten, such as; mobile phone charger, camera, camera batteries, first-aid kit, toiletries etc. This is when list-making comes into its own. If you’re going to a hot country, don’t forget your insect bite/sting cream. Something I always carry is a pack of tissues; I know it’s just a small item, but it comes under ‘Essentials’ for me.

REALLY ESSENTIAL

If you get as excited as I do prior to a motorcycle tour, please pay extra attention to making sure that you are carrying your bike documents and driving licence. If you are going overseas, don’t forget your passport, or you’ll be turning around and going home. .

DON’T FORGET

Unless you are heading for some remote region, there will always be a chance to buy things that you forget, but you aren’t really going on a shopping trip so try to remember as much as you can. No doubt, there will be something you need, and it can be fun finding these things in a foreign town, but if the list is long, it can become tiresome.

Ten Great Motorcycle Routes in Spain (Part 1)

There are hundreds of fantastic motorcycle routes in Spain. This country, which God must have been created with the biker in mind, offers everything from winding coastal roads to awe inspiring mountain passes. Here are ten of my favourite routes.

SANTANDER TO BURGOS

The N623 which rises to more than 1000 feet above sea level is one of the best pieces of tarmac you’ll ever have the privilege of using. Within its 143 kilometres are some really nice, undulating straights, downhill sweeps and hairpin bends. Stop at the top for a while and enjoy the stunning views.

SORIA TO LOGRONO

96 kilometres through the Sierra de Cebolleras. Temperature differences between the top and the bottom can be huge, so be prepared. This is definitely one of the most beautiful parts of Spain. Take care which time of the year you tackle this one. Fast straights and hairpins here, so be aware.

MAZARRON TO REQUENA

281 kilometres through one of the most sparsely populated areas of Spain, yet the roads are incredible. The scenery is unbelievable and it's quiet, so quiet. The spectacular nature reserve of ‘Muela de Cortes’ has a magical feel about it; probably because you can travel for miles without meeting a car..

ANTEQUERA TO VELEZ MALAGA

32 kilometres of long sweeping bends and spectacular scenery. Call in at the ‘Camping Bar’ for a coffee on the terrace that overlooks Lake Vinuela. Mount Maroma that stands at over 6,000 feet is often snow-capped. I don’t think you could find a better view from a bar anywhere. This can be made into a circular route by heading down to Torre del Mar then taking the coast road, before heading inland again.

NERJA TO ALMUNECAR

If coastal routes are what you like, ignore the new motorway link and take 25 kilometre old road. Be careful here, as the police do patrol this road with a view to collaring bikers. Since the new motorway has taken the traffic away, this road has become a favourite with local bikers, but sadly, some of them never make it to the end.

RONDA TO SAN PEDRO DE ALCANTARA

Fast bends and hairpins are a feature of this road. Ronda sits at a fairly high altitude and I’ve seen ice on this road at times of the year when there really shouldn’t be. As you’re coming down, look out for the Rock of Gibraltar in the distance. This road can be very busy as Ronda is a favourite with tourists. While you’re in Ronda, take a look around the oldest bull-ring in Spain. 41 kilometres

GRANADA TO MOTRIL

Once again it’s coast and mountains. 60 kilometres of pure bliss through mountain passes that are abundant with waterfalls. This is really a road for cruising and enjoying your surroundings. If you want to extend the ride, head east when you reach the coast road and stop of in at La Herradura, one of the most beautiful natural bays in Spain.

MALAGA TO CAMPILLOS

Once you’ve left the hustle and bustle of Malaga, you’re not far from Malaga’s Lake District. The spectacular El Chorro pass is where they filmed parts of ‘Von Ryan’s Express’ The lakes around this area are stunningly beautiful. There aren’t many fast roads around these parts, so once again it’s a day for cruising. This 72 kilometre ride, depending on the season, can be a route heavy with tourists.

CABO DE GATA TO TABERNAS

The lighthouse at the Cabo de Gata is the end of the road, but it’s worth going up the dead end to experience one of the best coastal runs in the country, albeit short. Once you’re on your way, it won’t be long before you’re passing through the only true desert in Europe, so be careful when you go. I did it in June and it was just as if someone had turned a hair dryer on me. If you have time, you could visit Mini Hollywood, the home of Spaghetti Westerns.

LANJARON TO TREVELEZ

This route is only 33 kilometres, but seems longer due to the number of sharp bends, and if you get behind a convoy of tourists you’re just about stuck. But having said that, the scenery is magnificent and the highest village in Spain lies at the end of the road.

I hope this has whetted your appetite for Spain. In my opinion it’s the best biking country in Europe.

Wintering Your Motorcycle in Self Storage

Motorcycles are great summer and fair weather transportation ways to get around. They are usually quite fast and save more than a little on gas when compared to driving a car. When the weather changes, however, and the street surfaces are no longer dry and clear, wintering your motorcycle in self storage is an excellent way to keep it safe, clean and protected from the winter elements.

In many starts, winter comes every year. During the winter, temperatures drop sometimes to below freezing and are a hazard just to be out in if you are not dressed properly. When winter comes, the grounds are often covered with snow and ice, conditions that make it impossible to ride a motorcycle safely. This means that for the most part, motorcycles cannot be driven in the winter in climates where snow and other road conditions make the roads a danger to motorcycles.

If you life in a state where winter is significantly different that summer, spring and fall and you own a motorcycle, you have a definite need to store your bike every year to protect it. Self storage may be the best option for storing your motorcycle. Many self storage facilities offer drive up units so that you can drive your bike right to the unit if you need and back it straight into the unit. These facilities understand the special needs of motorcyclists and usually have drive up units that are sized to hold your motorcycle and little more. In exchange for the smaller unit, you can be sure that your rental price will not be as costly as if you had to rent an entire large storage unit.

Another option for self storage is if you belong to a biker's club. One of the benefits may be that in exchange for paying annual dues, there is a place, such as a warehouse, where all of the bikers can store their motorcycles for the year. This is an excellent option to choose if you want to have access to your bike indoors for winter repairs. Some warehouses that are large enough may even allow you to ride your motorcycle indoors at safe, slower speeds.

Although you may have a garage, it doesn't mean there's space in there for your car. Even a larger garage can be needed for other things and vehicles that you use during the winter. This means that self storage can be a wise choice to get your motorcycle off the street and into a dry unit that will keep it protected from the elements until the winter season has passed.

Wintering your motorcycle in self storage involves a few basic steps if you plan to leave it sitting for several months without running it. You should have an oil change done and be sure that the appropriate oil is replaced in the engine. Even though you are not going to be driving it, the wrong type of oil sitting in the engine without use all winter can be hazardous in the engine's internal cylinders.

Even when you have a great place to store your motorcycle for the winter, you should be sure to have a way to cover it, such as with a heavy duty motorcycle cover or a tarp. The motorcycle covered is the preferred way because it will be designed specifically for a motorcycle and will not scratch the painted surfaces where pin striping and other items may be on the top layer.

You can check with auto garages as a place to winter your motor cycle. Some of these self storage garages do require you to pay your entire winter fee in advance. If so, it is sometimes because you will be storing your motorcycle in an elevated area that is not conducive to being moved or is stored behind other vehicles or motorcycles and cannot be moved. If you decide to use a garage, they are safe places but you need to be sure that you won't need to move your motorcycle or have access to it during the winter storage period because changes are you won t be able to do anything more than look at it where it stands.

No matter what type of self storage you choose for your motorcycle, give yourself the peace of mind by selecting a self storage facility that you trust, that has a reputation of keeping things organized, that you can afford and where your motorcycle will be stored safely.

Ten Motorcycle Tourers

Selecting a Tourer is a very personal thing, and I’m not saying that these ten machines are the best. Some may not be still in production, but they are all available, albeit second hand.

HONDA GOLDWING GL1800

The only bit of kit that Honda’s Flagship is missing is an ashtray, and they’re probably working on that at the moment. This bike has been around a long time in one guise or another, but you only have to see the number of owners clubs and members to realise that its popularity isn’t waning yet. A high-tech aluminium chassis keeps the weight down, providing a surprising turn of speed. This is the ultimate tourer, but just too bulky looking for some people.

BMW K1200LT

Although still quite heavy, this bike is more economical than the Goldwing. Looking around, it seems to be one of the most popular tourers around and rightly so if it’s power you want, but it needs a little care on the twisties. Newer models are fitted with a reverse gear.

HARLEY DAVIDSON ELECTRA GLIDE

It’s big, it’s brash and it’s American. Definitely built for comfort, not speed, but will turn more heads than you can shake a stick at. 110mph from a 1449cc engine says it all. One of the advantages of owning this machine is the minimal depreciation, and you’re always going have something to talk about to any passing stranger.

TRIUMPH TIGER TOURER

Oodles of acceleration, limited vibration and a truly versatile character. But having said that, if you’re on the short side, forget it. Being a shorty myself, I think it’s a shame that motorcycle manufacturers exclude a huge section of potential customers by having a high seat. However, the taller motorcyclists I know assure me that this is an exceptional bike. I’ll just have to take their word for it.

HONDA ST1300 PAN EUROPEAN

This is one of the most silky, comfortable, fast machines you’re ever likely to have the pleasure of putting your bum on. Even with two up it handles superbly. If you’re thinking about buying a tourer, this has to be worth considering.

YAMAHA FJR1300

This shaft driven offering from Yamaha was specifically built with touring in mind. The huge capacity tank and hard luggage are just part of the deal. Loads of power from the reliable engine will get you out of trouble, but that doesn’t mean it’s thirsty. The FJR represents value for money and I like it.

MOTO GUZZI NORGE 1200

An excellent value for money, shaft driven bike from Moto Guzzi. With a range in the region of 200 miles and a comfortable riding position, this is a true tourer. Some harshly describe this as the poor man’s BMW, but let’s get one thing straight; it’s shaft driven, but it’s not a BMW.

TRIUMPH TROPHY 1200

Sadly discontinued in 2002, the Trophy is still worth considering if you can find a decent second hand model. It’s a heavy bike, but it’s much cheaper than say, the Pan’s and you’ll still be getting a lot of bike for your money. For such a big bike, the cornering capabilities and general handling are pretty good, and you could do far worse than go for one of these, especially if you are on a limited budget.

HONDA DEAUVILLE

This mid size tourer can turn its hand to anything; ideal for commuting on a daily basis and touring across Europe, and the 54 litres of colour coded luggage will help. Low service costs and insurance group make the Deauville very attractive. The build quality of this shaft driven machine is legendary, making it high on would be adventurers’ short lists.

BMW R1200RT

A faster, lighter and much welcome successor to the R1150RT, this machine is not just a good tourer, it’s a good bike. One nice innovation on this bike is the height adjustable seat (there I go again). The Telelever/Paralever suspension provides excellent handling as you would expect from a BMW. Expect to pay a decent price for a second hand one, as these bikes hold their money, but if it’s in good condition you’re going to be the owner one nice bike.

Well, there are ten bikes for you, and they all have something to offer whatever your circumstances. If your favourite was not included, I apologise.
